Sewer Gas Leak

If your home suddenly smells like, well, sewer, you need to find its source fast. The methane in sewer gas is not only overpowering but it can also cause health problems. What is worse is that large concentrations of methane gas in the air is combustible and can ignite and cause fire. Sewer gas leaks often occur in bathrooms that are barely used. The pipe system in most bathrooms is designed so that there is water above to trap the gas below. Not using a bathroom for a long time will cause the water to evaporate and for sewer gas to leak out. After opening the bathroom windows to allow ventilation, pour into the drain a cup of white vinegar followed by a cup of baking soda and let it sit there for 1-2 hours. Next, pour in a gallon of boiling water. Then, follow this with half a cup of chlorine bleach, leave for another 1-2 hours, and follow with a gallon of boiling water. Finally, pour in a cup of cooking oil so that it films over the water in the pipe, slowing down the evaporation process.

Pet Accidents on the Carpet

If you have pets in your home, chances are they have urinated in the carpet at least once before you finally decided to house train them. The bad news is that pet urine smell doesn’t go away on its own. Aside from commercial carpet cleaning solutions, white vinegar best removes foul carpet odors, as well as stains and bacterial build up. Simply mix one part of white vinegar and one part water and spritz the solution directly into urinated part of the carpet. Let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour then wipe with a clean wet cloth and followed by a clean dry cloth or paper towels. Allow the area to air dry completely. You may have to repeat the process until all the smell is eliminated.

Fridge Smell

The old and proven solution for getting rid of fridge odors is baking soda. Simply open a pack of backing soda and place it on a rack or at the backmost part of the fridge. Baking soda naturally gets rid of foul smells by absorbing them. Replace the pack at least twice every year.
